Separate the conversation from the vessel
A yacht discussed through an Istanbul office may be lying elsewhere on the Turkish coast. Identify the vessel’s actual location, records and access for inspection early.
Keep the roles of seller, broker, independent surveyor and adviser clear. The convenience of arranging a meeting in the city does not replace evidence about the boat.
What would a city-based yacht do?
A plan centred on Bosphorus evenings or the Sea of Marmara differs from extended cruising farther south. Compare how often proximity to home would make the yacht genuinely useful.
Ataköy, Kalamış and Pendik are locations to investigate, not availability claims. Ask for a berth proposal matched to the yacht, access needs and intended use.
Review documents against the intended waters
Explain whether the yacht will remain in Turkey, visit other countries or operate commercially. Have qualified advisers review title, registration, tax and entry questions for that actual plan.
A Turkish or foreign flag does not by itself establish the outcome. Ask for documentary evidence and written explanations rather than adopting a broad claim about a preferred structure.
If the yacht will live farther south
- Compare Bodrum, Göcek or another proposed base with your expected visits.
- Inspect the actual vessel where appropriate lifting and trial arrangements are possible.
- Confirm berth, maintenance and local responsibility before planning handover.
- Review the records and any movement requirements with independent professionals.
A southern base trades immediate access for a different cruising setting. Make the travel part of the decision rather than an afterthought.
Think beyond the first season
Consider how a distinctive layout or construction fits your intended ownership period. A yacht can suit personal use without supporting a prediction of quick resale.
Keep records of maintenance, repairs and equipment clear. If a later move or sale elsewhere is likely, ask what documentation and operational questions deserve review now.
Use independent advice for commitments
If finance, a new-build agreement or a complex ownership arrangement is proposed, have independent advisers explain obligations, dependencies and what happens if circumstances change.
